New version of DTS for Windows NT and Windows 2000

5th September 2000

A new release of the Distributed Transaction System for Windows NT is now shipping. DTS/WinNT V4.0 is a full-function DTS environment for 32-bit Microsoft® Windows operating systems, Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 95 and Windows 98.

The purpose of raising the version number directly to 4.0 is to synchronize the version numbering of DTS Windows and UNIX implementations. The new release also introduces new features desired.

From now on DTS/WinNT back-end Handlers can also be implemented as methods in user-written Microsoft COM/ActiveX components. This option enables development of DTS back-end applications for a large amount of development tools and environments with no capability to build native Windows Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs). When combined with the front-end side COM support already introduced in version 2.2, DTS/WinNT can now be utilized in a fully object-oriented manner. The traditional DLL-based back-end Handler usage is still the other fully supported option, preferred by C/C++ developers and applications requiring maximum performance and optimized resource usage.

To simplify centralized configuration and troubleshooting of large Windows-based DTS networks the DTS Configuration Utility is now equipped with a remote configuration option. It allows a system manager with sufficient privileges to connect to another Windows computer in a Windows network and access the remote DTS configuration through the same user interface that is being used for local DTS configuration.

DTS/WinNT V4.0 contains support for TCP/IP communications, layered directly on the standard WINSOCK 2 interface. Via DTS a Windows NT, 2000 or 95/98 system can access application services on and exchange messages with other DTS environments like different UNIXes, VMS, MPE, CICS, OS/400, OS/2...

The DTSCRYPT strong data encryption support provides DTS transactions and intersystem communication a very secure environment where business critical data may be transferred as DTS messages over insecure communication lines safely.

DTS/WinNT V4.0 uses the DTS License Authorization Key mechanism. It allows more flexible distribution of evaluation kits and software upgrades. To submit a request for a free evaluation license, please fill up the registration form.
